A more recent one is the song "Eons" by 311 off their soundsystem lp... For some reason I always thought that the drums come in at the wrong place after the guitar intro...
also the verse beat on "song #1" by ima robot, where i mistakenly switched the upbeats to downbeats... all of which made the groove of the song sound much cooler... was a bit disappointed when i heard it the "right" way... anyways, I?ll post some more if i can think of them...

Just to narrow the focus and clarify it a bit, odd times aren't out, but since I already have a couple of odd time tunes, at this point I prefer 4/4 stuff simply because it's really about how your perception of the beat is deceived - not just a weird beat in an odd time that's hard to play. It has to be at the the start of the song, and it doesn't matter which instrument causes the misperception.
I think it's cool for an or all instruments to start a tune somewhere else than the 1.

I rem a late[?]-80s Firm tune [Zep's Jimmy Paige & Paul Rodgers, the orig singer w Bad Co], i think it was maybe "Radioactive" [i could be mistaken about which tune], which had a Chris Slade[?] drum-groove intro that sounded odd, as in started on a note other than 1, & very cool.
That popular late-70s tune Free Ride had a cool gtr rhythm intro that i perceived 1 in the wrong place when i first heard it, until the drums came in.
Jason Bonham had a hit tune [title?] in the late 80s/early 90s where he also turned the backbeat around in certain verses a la White in Yes' Hold On, but that's not an intro. Well actually it's not exactly like HO in concept, but is rather a shifting of the down-&-upbeat accents during the bar[s] a la Gregg B or Tweeked Pizza intro concept...
Even tho this isn't an option, i just have to call up the triplety mid-section of Weckl's Afrique off Hard Wired, since it's along similar lines [Holmes mentions it on his HOD 'mother' site]...wicked! What a great "turn" of the beat. Awesome there, Dave m' man! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Also, Mick Fleetwood played some really wierd beats that were hard to figure out in Fleetwood Mac...
Here's an obvious one, but has anyone ever transcribed the tom part (or bass drum sounding trigger)intro on Hot For Teacher. I saw Gregg B play that but didn't remember to have him write it out. Now, I'm gonna go practice my double bass shuffle! [img]wink.gif[/img]

The log drum intro to Galileo by the Indigo Girls is another. It feels like 1 until the guitar comes in. You can't go wrong with Jerry Moratta.
"Credit" by Tower Of Power has a cool intro.
I never took the time to figure that one out...

Anyway, one tune comes to mind where the start always threw me,( and still does now sometimes). Yellow Jackets - 'Top Secret' from the album mirage a trois. A fantastic tune but robben fords guitar at the start gives the impression of triplets when in fact he's playing 1/16ths. So when the drums come in it all makes sense.
